A Puff-bit about
Puff-types.
- Colemesus psittacus:
- Common, fairly peaceful, better in fresh, but survives light
brackish. Found in South America.
- Colemesus asellus:
- Less aggressive, freshwater. Found in South America.
- Tetraodon fahaka:
- Very aggressive. Found in N/central Africa from Nile basin in the
east & west. Up to 16". Freshwater.
- Tetraodon mbu:
- Congo River basin, very aggressive. Freshwater. Up to 3 feet! Not to
be kept with any other fishes.
- Tetraodon miurus:
- Aggressive, 'algae-covered rock' looking fish which
settles in the rocks & attacks prey from below. Freshwater.
- Tetradon shoutedeni:
- Found in pool Malebo & Congo river, peaceful except at breeding time.
Prefers a little salt. Growth is up to 4".
- Chonerhinos:
- 5 known species, all strictly freshwater, none to be trusted with
smaller fish. Found in South America.
- Chonerhinos modestus:
- Known as "golden puffer" and growth is up to 5". From Borneo,
Sumatra, Malaya and Thailand.
- Xenopterus:
- Thrives in brackish, but does poorly in fresh & marine. Extremely
aggressive. It can grow to 11" if left in the wild.
- Tetraodon cutcutia:
- Common puffer, fresh or brackish, Found on coastal regions of India,
Bay of Begal, & Andeman Sea to the Mlay Archipelago. Growth up to 6".
- Tetraodon erythrotaenia:
- Red-lined puffer, fresh & brackish. Found in Sulawesi (Celebes)
Island chain, Indonesia, & New Guinea. Growth up to 4" and mildly
aggressive.
- Tetraodon nigrifilis:
- Green puffer. Found in the Philippines to India. Freshwater
and brackish up to 7". Cute & docile while young, nasty in old age!
Spawned in aquarium.
- Tetraodon leiurus:
- Target puffer. Growth up to 5". Fresh & brackish. Found in
Thailand. Not aggressive, may be kept with larger fish.
- Tetraodon lorteti:
- Red-eye puffer. Growth up to 2.5". Male & female look wildly
different. Freshwater because it does poorly in marine water.
- Tetraodon patoca:
- Marine species which enters brackish zones. Found in Coastal India &
coastal bay of Bengal, from Andeman Sea to Malaya. Growth up to 12" and
is truly a peaceful fish.
- Tetraodon biocellatus:
- An aggressive freshwater species. Growth up to 8". Found from
Thailand, Sumatra, Borneo. Does best in strictly freshwater.
